Au bain marie

We did some test with au bain marie,we put the foam in a vacuum back in boiling water for 15 minutes and it worked very well. The foam good easily bend in all kind of shapes.
I got this trick from my supplier sp-bac and he did gave me also document about thermo forming.
We did buy the heater to boil the water at this shop http://www.dompelaar.com/ , it is a 2000W one.
I made a big basin for the real stuff so I can form plates 60cm wide, we shall do this outside the shed because you don't get all the vapor inside.
Did some testing to see what kind off screws I need for the foam and the battens and I came to the conclusion to take 4x30 Philips head.

The float frames have arrived

Today I did get my float frames they where nicely cut and I assembled them at home, it was a thigh fit.
Unfortunate the battens that I did order have not arrived at my supplier, but I have some other things to do to.

last small pieces before the float frames arrive

Today I made the other float rudder web, cut and grind the carbon fiber transom brackets and grind the yesterdays rudder web.

some delay

The float form frames where not ready yet so have to wait till next friday, I the mean time I did some shopping for some UD carbon and the light 250gr/m2 carbon cloth for the inside. I also ordered the wood battens for over the form frames. Yesterday a laminated the outside of the rudder transom brackets and today I did the inside. I also did one of the float rudder center webs, I was planning to do them both but I think I miscounted when cutting the carbon and I did see that I did not have enough UD carbon so I decided that I do that tomorrow.

grinned the beam gussets ready to fit

some small work

I did the following things today:
Float rudder mounts assembled (cut and glued)
Cut the chain plates
Making a mold for the carbon transom brackets, I make this of Styrofoam and break it away when the UD is done. I did this on Thrill Seeker the same. I glued the self made tube on top of the foam and when it is dry I cut the rest in form. I have run out of UD carbon fiber so I have to do some shopping to finish this

chain plates and rudder mounts

Today I laminated the carbon UD and the float rudder mounts. I decided for the float mounts because now it is easy to make. I will not start with the float rudders if the boat is finished.

Car spoiler

Today a brought my beams to my friend Marco's workshop to post cure. (The other two are in the car)

He has a nice working place http://www.stainlessproducts.nl/.
He will also cut out the float frames with his waterjet cutter http://www.waterjetproducts.nl/, they will be finished next friday.

Last year he finished his 30 foot carbon cat http://www.q-cat.nl/ , he did build his mast also, the profile I think is a little big for my comfort, but we have some time to think about it. The mast is made in a steal mold in two halves and is two sections.

tubes, rudder web, chain plates

The smallest tube for the chain plates was a bit of a struggle  to get the pipe out of the tube but in the end the pipe let go. The trick was to put it in the freezer. And the harvest of yesterdays laminate. Started with the begin of the chain plate and the rudder web.

First lamination of the year

Today we laminated the float bulkheads and stacked them up and the we put them under vacuum.
We pull a vacuum of -0,5 ~ 0,6 bar witch is good enough, when I started for the first time with vacuum I pulled -0,9 bar and I ended with a to dry laminate. My supplier told me that is to much and I was to quick with the vacuum.

Preparation for laminating

Today I cut the float bulkheads a slide bigger than they will be. After the lamination I cut them exact. Cutting the carbon, peel ply, breeder folie and breeder gloat for six bulkheads takes a wile , so no laminating today. I also made the rudder web because the 20mm foam  is then away.
